As we kick off the New Year, it's crucial to remain vigilant against scams targeting unsuspecting consumers.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently issued warnings about a range of fraudulent schemes, and at Gateway, we want to ensure our community stays informed to protect themselves in this busy period.
Key Scam Warnings to Watch For:
1. Impersonation Scams: Scammers often pose as representatives from the FTC or other government agencies. Remember, the FTC will NEVER demand money, threaten arrest, or promise prizes in exchange for personal information. If you receive a suspicious call or email, hang up and verify before acting.
2. Phishing Emails: Be cautious of emails claiming to be from the FTC. If you receive one with deceptive subject lines, such as "Pending consumer complaint," do not click on any links or provide personal information. Always check the sender's email address.
3. Fake Pet Ads: Be on the lookout for fraudulent pet advertisements. Ensure you are dealing with reputable sellers and meet the pet in person before any commitment. Or even better, visit the local shelter or rescue organization to find your new best friend.
4. COVID-19 Scams: Scammers continue to exploit fears around COVID-19. Be wary of calls about fake Medicare tests or unsolicited offers for health-related supplies.
5. Brushing Scams: If you receive items delivered to you that you didn’t order, you may be a victim of a brushing scam. Although not typically financially harmful, it can signal identity theft, so carefully monitor your online shopping accounts for unauthorized activity. Never scan QR codes on unexpected packages, and regularly change your online passwords.
Essential Tips for Protection:
Stay Informed: Knowledge is your best defense. Familiarize yourself with common scams and stay updated on new tactics.
Verify Sources: Always check the legitimacy of organizations requesting personal information through official channels.
Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect a scam, report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov (http://ReportFraud.ftc.gov). Your reports help combat fraud.
Be Cautious with Personal Information: Never disclose personal information unless you are certain of the recipient's identity.
Use Strong Passwords: Protect your online accounts with strong, unique passwords and two-factor authentication.
At Gateway, we prioritize the safety and financial health of our community. As we embrace the New Year, let’s commit to staying aware and cautious against scams that could take advantage of our goodwill.
